With the development of Chinese architectural design education, a professional educational system has been set up for architecture and the related majors, new distinctive educational methods emerge. Meanwhile, there are also some problems exist, such as the separation of teaching and practice, the limitation of elite education and so on. The new educational methods and strategies are needed to enhance the current architectural design education system. Under this historical background, participatory design as well as teaching theory and methods are introduced into the current architectural education in this paper. The participatory architectural education is also proposed and researched. With this research, a new architectural design teaching method is established, architectural design education theory is promoted and the trinity of practice, education and society for architectural design education system is established.This article starts with the construction of participatory design education theory. Firstly, the conception of participatory architectural design is defined. Participatory design is the main content and the participatory teaching is the assistant measure. With the integration of the concept and higher education connotative development, the three connotations of participatory architectural design education are defined, practice spirit, innovation methods and social responsibility. The three levels of participatory architectural design education subjects and objects are the subject and object of participation, design, and education. Secondly, on this basis, the research is carried out from the aspect of participatory design teaching system. The teaching orientation and special teaching environment are discussed in this article. As for the teaching methods, the ways of choosing the design topic as well as making a design survey and evaluating a design are suggested. Thirdly, in order to present the teaching achievement, the design story, research method, design strategy and the possibility of construction are discussed to reflect the design education connotation.Those three research aspects demonstrate the whole process of participatory architecture design education intensively from macroscopic to microcosmic, overall to locality and process to result.
