In 1970's American, higher education was facing the finance crisis, performance crisis and trust crisis; meanwhile it also underwent reformations inside. The reformation of tenure became the main trend of faculty evaluation development, in which post-tenure review came into being at the same time. Post-tenure review can be briefly identified as a periodically review of tenured professors, which aims at enhancing faculty development and sets the teaching, researching and service as the evaluating categories. The origination and development of post-tenure review were accompanied by fierce argument both inside and outside campuses. This paper will do some research on series questions concerning post-tenure review, including its identification, origination, value, procedure, as well as its influence on the reformation of faculty evaluation in China.To ensure the coherence of this paper, it is divided into 5 parts. Part one is the introduction, which introduces the theme's aim, analyzes research situation about the theme home and abroad, and defines the main concepts related to the theme.Part two explores the history and development of the Post-tenure Review (PTR). Since Post-tenure Review is originated from tenure, this chapter introduces the identity of tenure briefly first. Though tenure once brought prosperity to American higher education, it also aroused a great deal of arguments with the time matched on. Post-tenure review was originated since 1980th and developed from 1990th because of the new ideas and values it brought. As the core of the paper, part three concentrates on the practice of the post-tenure review including its guiding principles, models, criterions, procedures and result managements. The analyzing of characteristics of the PTR follows from the points above.Part four analyzes and summarizes the arguments and values that post-tenure review has brought. The post-tenure review has strengthened the value and covered some bad effects of tenure.In the last part some brilliant experiences are suggested to be used in our faculty evaluation reformation in China.
