This study investigated 1,200 sophomores and junior students from 3 Colleges and Universities in Jiangxi Province—Jiangxi Normal University, Nanchang Instituted of Technology, Nanchang Aviation University, were invited as the study participants. And eventually 914 copies of valid data were received. The results show that college students'self-handicapping have distinct differences in either gender or grade or city and countryside. Boys tend to have more self-handicapping than girls; students in junior class more than those in senior class; and students in the countryside more than those in the city. For various predictive variables of college students'self-handicapping, the overall self-esteem is the most important, followed by self-orientation, physical condition, body diathesis, body ego and motor ability, which can all significantly affect college students'self-handicapping. The study also shows that for every dimensionality variable, the most important predictive variable is not the body ego but the physical condition and body diathesis.By making use of the opened motor skill and the closed motor skill, this study reveals the influence of college students'self-handicapping and their related psychological factors. Through 8-week experimental intervention, the results indicate that opened motor skill and the closed motor skill have greatly improved college students'self-handicapping. And the opened motor skill improvement has advantages over the closed motor skill. At the same time, the opened motor skill and the closed motor skill have positive effects on college students'overall self-esteem and every indicator of physical self-esteem (such as body ego, motor ability, physical condition, physical attraction and body diathesis). As a whole, however, differences still exist in both two skills on the effect of college students'exercise. To a certain extent, this study reveals the relationship between college students'self-handicapping and their related psychological factors. For the first time, it is a self-exploratory research on improving self-handicapping by using the form of sports interventions, which provides some practical and theoretical basis for the study of self-handicapping.
