The phenomenon of academic achievement differentiation is a difficult problem that frequently puzzles the general educators. After implementing the new round of curriculum reform in senior high school, the phenomenon of academic achievement differentiation in mathematics is still remarkable, and it even has the tendency of increasing intensity. On the basis of relevant research at home and abroad, this paper has formed its own understanding of academic achievement differentiation in mathematics, that is , this phenomenon is very common in mathematics teaching practice, and its existence is inevitable. But the premature or excessive differentiation as well as the polarization is not normal, which will have negative impact on enhancing all students'mathematics accomplishment and promoting their all-round development. The implementation of new curriculum reform will also be affected. This article holds the idea that academic achievement differentiation in mathematics has some common features with that of other subjects, but it also has its own characteristics.By collecting and analyzing the students'mathematics scores of Senior Grade One in Nanchang University Attached Middle School, this paper has presented the current situation of mathematical achievement differentiation in Senior Grade One. Because of the complexity of academic achievement differentiation, this paper attempts to probe into its formation mechanism and analyze its in-depth causes with the aid of chaos theory, a kind of complex theory. The research found that this phenomenon is a state of imbalance in the entire mathematics learning system, induced by the differentiation, a kind of"strange attractor". The differentiation roots in the differences, including learners'individual differences, the differences of matching the teaching styles with the learning styles, the differences in interaction between teachers and students, the differences in the learning environment and so on. Any slight difference in certain conditions, after infinite amplification, would result in great differences of students'scores. Then here comes the differentiation. This is just in line with the"butterfly effect"of the chaos theory. In order to solve the problem of mathematics achievement differentiation in Senior Grade One, this paper tries to propose the following countermeasures and suggestions in the perspective of chaos theory: Using"attractors"to view mathematics achievement differentiation as a whole; Creating good initial conditions as the premise of preventing differentiation; Using the sensitive analysis to prevent the differentiation ahead of time; Employing the fractal theory to grasp the regularity in mathematics learning system.
