Symbols and graphs are the two basic study objects of mathematical study. The combination of symbolic and graphic means that, using algebraic in geometric problem solving or using geometric in algebraic problem solving. It helps solve questions much easier. It also helps turn Abstract thinking into specific thinking, which helps to understand the problem.In order to know the students' understanding about the combination of symbols and graphs, I choose 103 students from a senior high school of Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province. The paper studies the students from different departments. The paper study the students' ability and anxious of using the thinking of combination. I draw some conclusions as follows:Most students thought the combination of Symbols and graphs as drawing graphic in math problem solving. They know little about the significance, historical background. And some students felt unbelievable about using geometric process to prove the inequality. There is some difference between the students who study liberal arts and science in senior high school. The former get higher grade in the test, like algebraic, like using algebraic strategy to solve problem. The latter like geometric strategy to solve problem. The latter has more aware of the need of turning algebraic to graphic or turning algebraic to graphic.The paper proposed that in mathematics teaching, the thinking of the combination of Symbols and graphs is very important for all the students, to practice more in mathematics teaching, to prove the awareness of using the thinking of symbols and graphs' combinations.
