As the new English curriculum reform is developing and the English CurriculumStandards came up in2003,the aim of English teaching is to foster students’ ability of usingEnglish synthetically which is based on the five curriculum goals: language knowledge,language skills, emotional attitude, learning strategies and cultural awareness. In the reform ofmodern education, students are encouraged to participate in teaching activities actively,make a thorough inquiry happily, and take in new knowledge on their own. Englishhomework is one of the most important parts in English teaching as the useful supplement ofclassroom teaching. By doing the scientific and effective homework, students can improvetheir overall language ability. Under the influence of the reform of modern education,somepositive changes have taken place in educational practice. However, generally speaking,curriculum reform has little effect on the English homework. Compared with the requirementof the new English curriculum reform, traditional English assignment is out of date whichmust be developed.In order to make a study on what questions exist in the English homework design inSenior High School, the research which is based on the literature review introduces andanalyzes the experience of mother tongue assignment both at home and abroad providingteachers with reference. After the author combined the advanced educational theories with theresearch, Multiple Intelligences (MI), and Zone of Proximal Development is introduced intothe English assignment design which provides base for design and implementation of Englishassignment in Senior High School. Basing the survey on the status quo of students in class7and class8of Grade Two in Pingdu No.1Middle School by the way of questionnaires andinterviews, the author found that the English assignment had some problems. First of all,students had to finish too much homework which was lack of satisfaction in designingassignment. What’s more, the type of homework was monotonous with no interest. To solvethese problems, by making use of modern educational theories and guiding ideas of newcourse theory, the author makes an attempt to design a new assignment mode, in other words,the content of assignment with proper level of difficulty should be connected with students’ daily life and it should also be interesting for students which aims at the development ofstudents’ synthetic ability.After the study of the literature review and the advanced educational theories, the authormakes an experiment within class7and class8in Senior High School. In the actual teachingprocess, the experimental class took advantage of the new assignment mode, while the controlclass still makes use of the traditional assignment mode. When the experiment was finished,the author collected the data of the questionnaires and the test before and after the experiment,finding that it is scientific and effective to carry out the new assignment mode and it canimprove students’ comprehensive language using ability. Finally, the suggestions andindications about the research were concluded briefly. Because the author has limitedknowledge and ability,there was some shortcomings in the experiment. Furthermore, it needsto be examined and perfected in the actual teaching practice, especially for the sake of itslimitations. At the same time, the author looks forward to the further research to be discussed.In a nutshell, in order to improve students’ autonomous learning ability of English, anddevelop their ability of using English appropriately, the research makes an attempt to explorethe scientific methods of designing English assignment in Senior High School and come upwith the idea of improving the quality of it.
