Sexual harassment was originated in the U.S.A. in the 1970's. In the following 20 years, sexual harassment has developed from a personal problem to a social problem, which aroused great attention of the whole nation. This paper will be developed from the view of social culture and legislation, probing into sexual harassment in the workplace in the States, in which most victims are women. Firstly, the paper will review the history that how sexual harassment became illegal and the evolvement of its definitions, in which unwelcomeness is a core word. Next, the paper will examine the prevalence of sexual harassment in the workplace. This chapter involves men's and women's perceptions, some findings on victims, sources, forms and harm, and laws prohibiting sexual harassment. Thirdly, the paper will analyze the improvement on the cognition of sexual harassment. It is a form of sex discrimination and relates to racial issues. Besides, categories, standard and prevention will also be stated in detail. Finally, the paper will point out the enlightenment brought by the study of sexual harassment in American workplace, including the efforts of feminists, and the negative effects of legislation.
