English learning strategies has been a hot topic in English teaching field since the 1970s.New curriculum standard for English teaching in china requires teachers change the traditional teaching methods and make students improve their learning ability by adopting English learning strategy training. Teaching students how to study is our education goal.Vocabulary is the most important one of the three major components that constitute English language, and it is the foundation of any kind of communication. Vocabulary learning is an important part of language acquisition. How to improve the students' vocabulary learning efficiency by vocabulary learning strategies?This paper describes the foreign and Chinese studies on vocabulary learning strategies and the facts of English vocabulary teaching and learning in Shanghai junior middle school. The subjects of the study were the grade 8 junior students from shanghai Huangpu district, Pudong new area and Jinshan district, and the instruments adopted included a questionnaire and interviews. Detailed analysis of both the qualitative and quantitative data has yielded the findings as follows: 1. The junior students seldom adopt English vocabulary learning strategies. 2. Good and poor English learners from junior middle school differ in English vocabulary learning strategies. 3. There exists a certain correlation between vocabulary learning strategies and achievements. The investigation is designed to examine the effect of English vocabulary learning strategy training between the experimental class and the control class. The experimental class has received English vocabulary learning strategy training. The control class has received English vocabulary learning in their usual way. This results shows that vocabulary learning strategy training can not only improve students' English competence, but also help them form good English learning habits.
