To help students develop their learning strategies is the demand set on modern education. Many psychologists and educationists consider a good grasp of learning strategies to be the most important aspect of language acquisition.Vocabulary learning is a basic part of language learning and crucial to the second language proficiency. But it is the most difficult task for most students as well. Lots of researches show that the effect of vocabulary learning strategies is the most evident among all the controllable elements upon language achievement. So the author made a study on the survey of English vocabulary learning strategies used by junior middle school students.The study is based on the Theory of Memory,The Theory of Depths of Processing,Semantic Field Theory and Theory of Language Chunk. It attempts to explore the concept and overall pattern of English vocabulary learning strategies used by junior students; the differences in concepts and English vocabulary strategies used between successful and unsuccessful learners; the relationship between certain types of vocabulary learning strategies use and vocabulary size scores and to what extent English vocabulary learning strategies training will affect students' test scores.The participants are students from two classes in Grade8 of Huayuan Middle school in Changzhou. They are taught by the author. Most of them have formed certain ways to learn vocabulary, but they are eager to solve the problems of learning vocabulary to enlarge the vocabulary size. According to the questionnaire from Gu and Hu and the actual situation of the author's students, a questionnaire with fifty options are designed. The strategies are investigated at meta-cognitive strategy,cognitive strategy and affective strategy, the vocabulary tests are designed to check spellings,meanings and usages of the words as well. And then the date was analyzed by using SPSS 17.0By undertaking the questionnaire and conducting date analysis, the author made an intensive investigation on the students' vocabulary learning strategies, including meta-cognitive strategy,cognitive strategy and affective strategy, and then some valid strategy trainings are carried on in the experimental class; after the training, the students were given another vocabulary test.The result shows that junior middle school students seldom use vocabulary learning strategies, especially affective strategy and some strategies which need intensive processing; marks are significantly relevant to vocabulary learning strategies; there are variations between the applications of successful learners and unsuccessful learners. After the training, the students can significantly improve their overall level of English vocabulary learning strategies.Finally, some suggestions were given based on the research and the author's teaching experience.
