Ping-Pong has become one of the most popular optional courses in general institutions of higher learning currently for several factors. Its basic skills are easy to learn, the rules are not complex, the equipments that this game requires are quite simple, it can be carried out both indoors and outdoors, and it fits different people with different age, sex, health status and demands of exercise. But with the popularity of this game comes some relevant problems. This paper, with the teachers and also students of the Ping-Pong course in some universities in Hunan as the research objects, and the basic situation that how this course is carried out in these places as the research targets, tries to unveil some shortcomings in teaching, and to find out some existed problems and then, find the solution to perfect the teaching procedures, and to advance the quality of education of college students by physical training. This research is done for the general situation about how Ping-Pong courses are launched in universities by documentary, investigatory and observational methods. And the detail contents mainly concern with the teachers, the way of teaching, the students that have signed up for the course, gym facilities and some extracurricular activities, and the result has shown that:1.Generally the total quality of the teachers for Ping-Pong in most universities in Hunan is at a comparatively higher standard with a reasonable construction of age and teaching age. But 67.9% of these teachers haven't been majoring in Ping-Pong during their school years, and 62.1% of the teachers haven't chosen to teach Ping-Pong as their first jobs, which, to a large extent, has decreased the holistic teaching quality.2. Most college students in Hunan get a strong interest in this game and have more or less held some basic skills, and most students have had some basic knowledge about Ping-Pong before they begin their Ping-Pong courses. The number of students who have never played Ping-Pong before they enter the college takes only 15.8%. Hobbies and means of exercise together make up for the main motivations for students to sign up the course. And a big part of the students have stated that they will take Ping-Pong as their main way to train their bodies, which shows a good sense of lifetime physical training.3.The facilities this course requires are comparatively insufficient. More than a half of the total students take self-provided rackets. Teachers that are not satisfied with the facilities occupies a percentage of 12.5%, while the number of students reaches 15.3%, which shows that demands are hardly met.4.The number of students that have taken Ping-Pong as an extracurricular sport holds a percentage of 91%, but these people are not well supervised or organized. This to a high degree concerns with the management system.5.The chances of continuation education and on-the-job training for teachers are rare, going against the enhancement of teaching quality.6.Over-populated classes and insufficient teaching load are found in some universities in Hunan. Some students know nearly nothing about Ping-Pong, and the dominating method to teach Ping-Pong is the"Learn and Pass On", which is not good for Ping-Pong teaching.7.The contents of Ping-Pong courses mainly deal with the basic skills, involving a large amount of information. 70.7% of students say to be satisfied with the course arrangements while 55.4% of students think that more teaching hours are in demand.8.The evaluation of theory learning varies in different ways, but is mainly through open-book examinations. And the evaluation of practical course is set up at the last few periods after the practical course is finished.
