Matches on clay and hard courts dominate today's tennis professionals. World famous tennis players will participate in matches of different types of courts every season, among which many are on clay and hard courts and with different results. Therefore, analyzing the decisive factors of man's singles on clay and hard courts will be beneficial for tennis coaches and players to grasp the key points in matches and trainings and for man players to attend the professional tennis matches as well as develop and improve their skills. This paper employs research approaches such as literatures, video observation, mathematical statistics, contrastive analysis and logic analysis to analyze the use of tactics during the 2006-2008 semi-finals and finals in U.S. Open and French Open. Conclusions are as follows:1. The differences in the technique subduing factors in clay-court and hard-court matches are mainly as follows:(1)First serve in clay court matches succeed easier than hard court ones, whose first serve scoring rates are higher but with a lower winning rates. Winning the clay court matches depends on the scoring ability in the stalemate counterwork after first serve.(2)Clay court matches use forehand drive more frequently. Hard court ones score more with forehand drive and have higher scoring rates with forehand sideway attack and higher frequency in using backhand cutting-ball. Backhand defense and attacking ability weigh a great deal in winning the hard court matches.(3)Hard court matches use volley tactics more frequently which has a great influence on winning the game. The smash and lob using frequency and scoring rates are higher in clay court matches than hard court ones.(4)Clay court matches are easier to have successful first serve. But theirs scoring rates bear little difference concerning catching the first serve. 2. The differences in the tactics subduing factors in clay-court and hard-court matches are mainly as follows:(1)Clay court ones have more evident scoring advantages in and after the first flap, with regard to the former four flaps. Their scoring ability surpasses the losers, especially after the ninth flaps. Hard court matches have higher scoring rates during the first four flaps; this is especially evident in the first and third flap.(2)Compared to hard court matches, clay court matches use the tactical stalemate, which is of vital importance in winning, more frequently and scores more than the other two tactics---serve-catch tactics and offense-defense tactics .Hard court matches use serve-return tactic more frequently and enjoy much higher scoring rates than their opponents; thus this tactic is more important and crucial with regard to the other two tactics.(3)Compared to hard court winners, clay court ones make fewer mistakes than their opponents. Clay court players score by causing their players to make bottom-line mistakes or they score initiatively. However, hard court matches enjoy more initiative scores than their opponents which is of great significance in winning; winning the hard court matches depends on the initiative scoring ability in serve-return offense and defense. Compared with initiative scoring factors in hard court matches, clay court players win usually by direct serve and ACE ball. Moreover, clay court matches benefit from the tactical stalemate more, while hard court matches scores more with serve tactics.
