Teachers'professional development is an important topic in today's education reforms, which is full of theoretical value and practical significance. It is also one of the hottest topics in the field of education at home and abroad. It is now facing with a new challenge, and it is also given some new meaning and contents in China'basic education curriculum reforms. It is the original driving force and a key element of education development and reforms. As for the English teachers living and working in the rural areas, their professional development is very urgent because of their relatively closed working environment.This paper is based on the literature analysis of many papers and studies about teachers'professional development. Meanwhile, it is closely connected with the author's eleven-year experience as a rural English teacher. It analyses the professional development of seventy one rural English teachers working in six junior middle schools by means of questionnaires and interviews. Then it shows shortcomings and deficiencies, and analyses the reasons. At last, the author is trying to give some suggestions in order to improve rural English teachers'professional development.This paper is made up of six parts.Part One is about its study background and theoretical value and practical significance. Part Two is about the existing studies of teachers'professional development and its theoretical basis. In this part, the author analyses lots'of relative books and papers and shows the shortcomings and deficiencies of the existing studies, and gives the foothold of this study.Part Three is about the study samples and study ways, which briefly shows the current situation and natural conditions of the southwest county in Shandong Province.Part Four is about analysis results of this study. It shows the current situation of the professional development by using SPSS software, which mainly includes the following factors: the basic qualities, professional knowledge and skills, professional emotions and some other factors which is indispensable to rural English teachers'professional development.Part Five is about the current problems and the analysis of the reasons.Part Six is about the suggestions and strategies to improve rural English teachers'professional development.
