The for-profit university is long-standing in the U.S, but it has never been taken seriously in the oppressed. With the rise of the new liberalism and market-oriented reform movement in higher education, many countries appear to for-profit institution and even some national laws expressly permitted through the establishment of for-profit higher education institutions. For-profit higher education has become an important phenomenon worldwide, and it may continue to be rapidly expanded elsewhere. The increasing respectability of the for-profit institutions and their growing visibility within the higher education community is evidenced. And the for-profit universities in the U.S are striking in the rapid development. Over the past 10 years, the for-profit university has sprung up everywhere to rise to the government, business, education, scientific research, and the concern of all respects of life by its high-peed growth, unique business model. Apollo Group and its subsidiary University of Phoenix are typical in the U.S. Therefore, a study of the for-profit university in the U.S has the reference value to China.The purpose of this paper is, first, to examine the historical development and current system of the for-profit university in the U.S, and then, to explore its implementation process, and thirdly, to analyze its characteristics.The main part of this thesis consists of four chapters.Chapter One"Historical development of the for-profit university in the U.S", briefly reviews three stage of development relating to the for-profit university, that is beginning stage, winding development stage, and prosperity stage.Chapter Two"The current system of the for-profit university in the U.S", first, sketches the nature of the for-profit university, and then examines the type of the for-profit university, and thirdly, reviews the management and operation mode of the for-profit university.Chapter Three"A case study of the for-profit university in the U.S", examines the University of Phoenix as a case study from its mission, enrollment targets, teacher hiring and curriculum and reviews the contents of the Phoenix.Chapter Four"Characteristics of the for-profit university in the U.S"summarizes the following characteristics of the for-profit university in the U.S: student-centered, part-time teachers, the main course and enterprise management and so on.
