With the development of American for-profit colleges, it has been an important part of American higher education. But without ignorance, there appeared more problems. This paper intends to use document research, history research and comparative research. To make a study on the development of American For-profit colleges since the 20 th century, and to discuss the problems, causes and solutions.Without the introduction, this paper is divided into four parts to analyze:The first part is issued by time sequence. It describes the development of American For-profit colleges and divides into four phases: Slow development period, tortuous development period, rapid development period and downturn period. In each stage, combined with the social background, the relevant government policy and the actual situation, analysis the characteristics of American for-profit colleges in different periods, and summarizes the historical experience. The second part puts forward the problems of the American for-profit colleges from three aspects. In terms of educational quality, include the talent training mode is not reasonable, the lack of teachers, the poor quality of students, the low graduation rate and severe employment situations. In terms of financial resources, include the single source of funds, higher tuition fees, the unreasonable expenditure and high student loan default rate. In terms of the image and reputation, include the misleading and cheating behavior, the poor social reputation. The third part discusses the reasons of the problems from two aspects of external and internal factors. The external reasons are the fault of supervision systems, the social economic environmental influence, the government’s policy preference and the influence of history and cultural concepts. The internal reasons are the fault of for-profit colleges’ teaching model, management model and the squalid pursuit of profit. The fourth part analyzes the problems of the American for-profit universities. On the one hand, the author combs the federal government’s response to the policy. In the quality of education, reformed the Higher education accreditation system and point system, introduced the “paid employment” rule. In the financial funds, strengthened the deal with loan default rate. The government took over the loan transaction and strengthened the 90/10 rule. In the image and reputation, limited “Incentive compensation” and introduced the new “False statement” rule. We can find that these policies have really solved a part of problems of for-profit colleges, but there are still some place that need to be improved. And on the other hand, I put forward some suggestions of American for-profit colleges. It contains four parts: Change the concept. Strengthen self-construction. Strengthen the security system. Shape and spread a positive college image.I believe by this research, we can gain a better understanding of American for-profit colleges, and it may provide some reference and enlightenment for the private higher education.
