The resource-based cities are developed with the development and utilization of the natrual resources. They are always the significant base of the energy and raw material which make a significant contribution to the national economy and development of the society. Due to the problem of resource exhaustion and the changes of maeket demands , the resource-based cities are facing the dual challenges of resource exhaustion and the citys sustainable development. The passage does a study aiming at how to realize sustainable development. By the combination of theory and practice, it proposes the main approaches of the resource-based cities sustainable development which are analyzed the basic information of the resource-based cities. At the same time, it does empirical analysis to the Song Yuan located in Ji Lin province which is induced in the transition experience to the home and abroad typical resource-based cities. I hope it can play a guidable and practical role to the sustainable development of Chinese resource-based cities in the future.
