Modernity, as an era of ethos, refers to the norms and ideals which dominate the changes of modern society, with the pursuit of human emancipation and freedom, people's rational supremacy as its core. In this sense, the enlightenment rationality gradually awakens our human beings out of the bondage of traditional thinking such as sorcery and enchantment. The enlightenment rationality conquers nature so that man can live an easy life. In this process, Enlightenment rationality is gradually divided into instrumental rationality and value rationality. With the rapid transformation in modern society, instrumental rationality gradually permeates all areas of social life and gains a dominant position, leading to a recession of rational value. This imbalance made the great achievements of the modernity, but caused great disaster to human society. It is along with modernity that Social Science is generated and continues growing. The emergence of instrumental rationality has a positive impact on the establishment of social sciences and its scientific status as well as its subject legalization. Meanwhile, it also has its limitations to ontology, methodology, epistemology and axiology. In this paper, I will analyze enlightenment reason and discuss modernity to reveal the plight and the significance of the modern nature, trying to find the solutions to the dilemma.
