After the issue of Decision on the Reform and Development of Elementary Education in June 2001, a new round of curriculum.reform in elementary education was initiated. As one of the testing areas of new curriculum reform in Jiangsu Province, Suzhou stepped into the reform of PE lessons and has received much attention up until now.Based on a few research methods such as bibliographical method, questionnaire method, interview method, statistical analysis, this thesis analyzes the result of the questionnaires, which come from 240 teachers and 1200 students from 60 junior middle schools randomly selected from five counties and seven districts in Suzhou, as well as research fellows and expert teachers. The questionnaire deals with the status quo of PE teaching, including qualifications of teachers, aims, content, procedures and assessment of teaching, equipment, and performance of students in PE lessons. The conclusions are as follows:1. Suzhou possesses a team of well-qualified teachers, but the shortage of teachers makes it hard to meet the needs of new curriculum. As a result, PE teachers are overstressed and unable to perform excellently in the organization of lessons. The evaluation system in schools is inefficient and the school authorities pay little attention to the teaching quality.2. The understanding of curriculum standards of PE.lessons varies between teachers in city-level schools and those in county-level and rural schools, with the latter ones lacking due understanding. During the carrying out of new curriculum, teachers.can basically center around the guide lines and theories of the new curriculum, but still need scientific guidance and experimental research to carry out it more deeply.3. Teachers are well aware of the important role of setting reasonable teaching aims and carrying them out during teaching. Traditional sports items are still the focus. The inclination to exam sports items still exists while due attention is paid to students'interests and needs. PE teaching featuring ethnic traditions is weak and the development of school-based curriculum is ignored.4. The PE teaching remains centering traditional method, with some improvement in organization of the class and teaching methods. There is misunderstanding in the learning method advocated by the new curriculum, featuring independence, cooperation and devotion, and that leads to the teaching method of emphasizing the form while overlooking the guidance, which makes the teaching unorganized among some teachers.5. The assessment system of PE lessons has experienced great changes in content and form, but is not perfect in performance due to the limitation of actual conditions.6. The amount of equipment and athletic ground can basically meet the requirements of the PE teaching in most schools while the inefficiency exists in rural schools. The develop and use of PE resources are not full, which deserves much attention.7. Overall, students develop great interests in sports, master certain athletic skills and are satisfied with PE lessons. Most students develop an interest in PE lessons and build up the awareness of health while some still can not grasp a favorable recognition of PE lessons and need due guidance.
