To foster students'science literacy is the most important goal of science and technology education in almost every country in the world. Nowadays, the main trends of science and technology education are student-centered teaching, emphasizing fostering both manipulative ability and critical thinking, exploring"real"problems and using inquiring teaching, etc. Science and technology education in primary schools aims to inspire students and foster their science literacy. Students in primary schools are full of curiosity and interest in what's going on around them. Keeping this advantage of students'curiosity and interest in mind, it is of great significance to design and implement projects in science and technology education so as to lay a foundation for their knowledge in science and technology, manipulative ability, and scientific spirit, and benefit students throughout their lifetime.This study aims to design and implement a series of science and technology education projects in primary school, to observe the process of the projects and analyze their results so as to find out the effect of science and technology education in fostering students'science literacy in primary schools. This thesis gives a brief review of the present situation of the researches on science and technology education in primary schools both at home and abroad; and briefly analyzes the situation of the science and technology teaching in my local school, in weicheing district, in Weifang city as well as in Shandong province. The author thus has arrived at the conclusion that there is a lot to be improved concerning science and technology education in primary schools in China so it's compelling to gather successful examples concerning the design and implementation of science and technology education projects in primary schools. So the author is convinced that it's important to do this research. This thesis discusses the meanings of science, technology, science and technology literacy and science and technology education, and the approach on science and technology education from the perspectives of brain science, constructivism and scientific learning theory and thus offers a theoretical foundation for designing and implementing projects of science and technology education in primary schools. It also discusses the three levels of designing projects of science and technology education- subject level, unit level and specific project level. This thesis focuses on the design of specific projects.This thesis also discusses the basic requirements for designing projects of science and technology education in primary schools. The first one is to implement the goal requirements in Curriculum Standards for Science in Primary Schools; the second one is to design projects for all students; the third one is to inspire students learning interest; the fourth one is to design projects using resources available in the school and the local area; the fifth one is the integration of different subjects in science and technology education.This research mainly covers three aspects- approaching scientists, designing and implementing variety of extra-curriculum activities of science and technology education, integrating different subjects in science and technology education.Data collected for this thesis was analyzed by using the statistical treatment software Social Sciences Statistical Package- S.P.S.S.17.0. The results of the data were further discussed and the findings and conclusions are as follows: the projects of"approaching scientists"have inspired the students'interest in science and technology; variety of extra-curriculum activities is conducive to fostering students'science literacy; the integration of different subjects in science and technology education helps students build positive attitude towards science. Suggestions on how to design and implement science and technology education projects include setting up appropriate goals and having an overall science and technology education perspective, promoting the spirit of science and helping students build dreams, extending learning after school, expanding teaching opportunities and creating learning environments for science and technology education, and making the teaching of science and technology benefit both teachers and students. The features of this study and further research problems are also discussed.This study was done by means of literature review, teaching experiment, and contrast analysis of science and technology project products.
