In task-based approach, language teaching is based on tasks and teachers encourage students to use English to perform various tasks.Through doing tasks, students take part in language communication, so they can get many opportunities to learn and use English. All these language activities lead to meaningful and practical language use and combine language learning and language use effectively. Therefore students' communicative competence is developed. In addition, task-based approach emphasizes the positive role of students in language teaching and learning, so it inspires students'interests in language learning.The command of vocabulary has a direct effect on students four fundamental language skills—listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students' communicative competence is directly influenced by their vocabulary command. Nowadays, in senior high school English class, although a lot of time and energy is spent on teaching vocabulary, the situation is far from being satisfactory. It is necessary to find a more effective method to solve the problems in senior high school English vocabulary teaching. The thesis aims at probing and solving these problems with task-based approach.The thesis consists of three chapters.The introduction briefly introduces the importance of vocabulary teaching and the situation of English vocabulary teaching in senior high school in China. Through reviewing the development of tasks and task-based approach, the author argues that it is effective and feasible to apply task-based approach to English vocabulary teaching in senior high school.Chapter one presents the importance of context in vocabulary teaching and learning. The author carefully discusses how to use task-based approach to teach vocabulary in the context and then analyzes its teaching effect.Chapter two proposes the importance of situational sentences in vocabulary teaching and learning. The author carefully discusses how to use task-based approach to teach vocabulary in situational sentences and then analyzes its teaching effect.Chapter three shows the importance of lexical chunks in vocabulary teaching and learning. The author carefully discusses how to use task-based approach to teach vocabulary in lexical chunks and then analyzes its teaching effect.The conclusion summarizes the significance of task-based approach in English vocabulary teaching and points out its advantages as well as its disadvantages.
