Nowadays in L2 acquisition and EFL teaching task-based approach (TBA) has become a heated topic, In the past twenty years, many experts in applied linguistics have not only do researches into task-based approach in theory but also explored it in practice. And a lot of volumes of literature have come into being. TBA is an important language teaching mode that is based on lots of researches and practice by the language teaching researchers. TBA is recommended for primary and secondary school English teaching in English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education and Senior Middle School and English Curriculum Standards for Senior Middle School (experimental). Teachers are asked to make use of this teaching method as much as possible, assigning clear tasks to students, letting them develop their language abilities and communication and collaboration abilities while doing things. In this method task design plays a very important role. Many teachers do not know much about TBA and task. So they do not design scientific tasks, which have bad effect on teaching and do not benefit the students.The teaching is not in agreement with the New English Curriculum Standards. Therefore, the author reckons that it is of great importance to elaborate on task design to make sure that more teachers know how to design good tasks for listening, speaking, reading and writing English teaching so as to develop students' language abilities.At the very beginning of the thesis, the author gives an introduction about TBA and then states the relevant theories. After that she studies the task in someaspects, such as the definitions of task, the features of task, the components of task and the typology of task. And the writer also gives us the principles for task design to help teachers in middle school have a good understanding of task design. The emphasis of this paper is on the application of task design which is helpful for teachers in practice. The writer hopes that the thesis will give a guidance to the teachers in the middle school, so that the TBA can be made full use of in the English teaching .In the end the writer gives two examples for the task design and a questionnaire which proves that the scientific task design is of great importance to the students' interest in English and the development of their language abilities.
