The new curriculum reform in high school is linked to the high school teachers'professional development. The key of the smooth implementation of the new high school curriculum reform is the successful implementation of the professional development of teachers in high school. In the context of the new high school curriculum reform in the forthcoming September 2010 in Chongqing, because there are 70% of the teachers and students in rural areas and English in rural high schools is the weakest subject, researching status of rural high school teacher professional development, understanding the problems of their professional development and proposing solutions policy is very important to improve the overall quality of the rural high school English teachers, promote the smooth implementation of high school English curriculum, narrow the gap between urban and rural high school English education and promote fairness in education.In this study, Hechuan rural high school English teachers are used as the research object. The research way of questionnaires, interviews, discussions and classroom observation are used to investigate the rural high school English teachers Professional Development. Analysing the obstructive factors on the rural high school English teacher professional development and exploring strategies to promote their professional development can promote the successful implementation of high school new curriculum reform in Chongqing rural and promote their professional continued development.The thesis is divided into four parts:The first part is an introduction. The reasons of the topics selected, the purposes, meaning, objects and method of the study are illustrated. The two core concepts of the teacher professional development and the English teacher professional development are defined. The theoretical bases of teacher professional development are explained, which are the Main Needs Theory and the Teacher Empowerment Theory. The research of the teacher professional development and the English teacher professional development are overviewed.In the second part, the Status of Hechuan rural high school English teachers Professional Development is investigated from the five points of view: the concept of teacher education, professional knowledge, expertise, professional attitude and motivation, self-awareness of the needs and professional development. There are many problems in the rural high school English teachers, which are the low overall professional quality, the unreasonable sex, the low satisfaction on working and survival conditions, too large psychological stress in generally, fewer opportunities to participate in study and training with little effect, and so on. The main external factors of restricting the professional development are the unsound system of teachers'education and training, the lack of school conditions and measures on promoting professional development for teachers. The main internal factors are the following: the weak awareness of the professional development, the lack of motivation, the lack of professional quality, the low job satisfaction for the low treatment and the high strength work pressure, the lack of educational research awareness,quality and ability, Etc.In the third part, the promotion of rural high school English teacher professional development strategies are tried to put, which are based on Professional development of teachers at the individual level, school management level and level of education administration to protect. The author puts forward the following suggestions: the training systems for perfecting teachers'continuing education, the incentives for innovating teacher professional development and the protection mechanism for reforming teacher professional development; strengthen information construction to protect teachers'teaching and learning resources; the establishment of cooperative school-based training system, the organization of school-based curriculum development; and the same time, career planning should be developed to enhance the professionalism; the autonomic participation in education and scientific research, carrying out action research actively; upgradeing the wisdom of teaching practice by enhancing teaching reflection.The fourth part is Conclusion.
