Since from 1990, SNMP has became the de-facto protocol of TCP/IP network management. However, traditional central network management can not meet the modern network management requirement, while decentralized and intelligent agent is being considered as the trend of the future network management. How to attain this goal mentioned above without modifying the legacy network is an issue in industry. In order to meet it, IETF draw up AgentX Protocol as the standard extend to the SNMP.In this aticle, AgentX is deivided into 3 parts in terms of function sets: Session Management Module, Index-Allocation and Range-Register Module, PDU Process Module. Except for the common PDU process, author detailly analyse the key points during implementing these 3 modules:First in Session Management Module, solution to lose link between master agent and subagent is main content;then in Index-Allocation and Range-Register Module, more attention is put on how master agent to allocate various index-allocation and the strategy of sloving register conflict, finally in PDU Process Module, discussion is initiated in both sides: in master agent end, variable mapping and request grouping and the process of endOfMibView is discussed, while in subagent end, how to answer agentx request sent by master agent, especially how subagent to update the variable binding by using two parameters in AgentX-GetBulk-PDU is main content. In the end of this article, author establishes a testbed to verify the following aspects of AgentX protocol implementation: subagent session Info, range register on master agent, message dispatching and notification forwarding by using the standard Agentx MIB and private MIB.
