SNMP(Simple Network Management Protocol) was one of the early proposed protocols. It has been widely used and supported. Nowadays it is practical industrial standard. When SNMP was widely used in managing hosts and network equipments, many important business applications moved from hosts to PC servers, desktops and various hand-held mobile equipments. For promoting such offstandard equipment management, DMTF(Desktop Management Task Force) released DMI 1.1 in 1994, and released DMI 2.0 capable of remote DMI equipment management in 1998, and then released DMI 2.0.1.DMI is a open technology standard drafted by trade steering oganization DMTF. Intrinsically, it is a method to manage desktop system. A computer on which certain low side software proxies(DMI service layer, component interface, and management interface) are installed is considered accordant with DMI 2.0. All the software packets which are accordant with DMI 2.0 can query computer and then generate the list of main computer components(such as CPU, memory and BIOS).SNMP has been widely used in network management and has been practical standard, but it is too far away to be capable of desktop equipment management, which is strong point of DMI. Consequently, it is important to solve the problem of mutual operation between SNMP and DMI for enabling SNMP management of DMI equipments, which has important practical meaning in extending the range of objects could be managed by SNMP, in solving the problem of mutual operation between heterogeneous networks, in unified SNMP management of network products abide by different protocols, and in securing client's investment on existed network equipment. We introduced the concept of distributed agent, and proposed a transfer proxy agent model of DMI-SNMP for mutual operation between two main network management protocols: SNMP and DMI. Furthermore, we enabled SNMP managementof DMI component equipments by implementing the prototype system of that model.
