Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) is a very high nutritional value of vegetables which are planted throughout the country, and its resources are very rich. Its roots are the folk medicine in Sichuan Province, but also the common medicine of Mongolian and Hani, but the cucumber roots were often abandoned, that very waste of its resources. For the aim of the further development and utilization of the medicinal resources of Cucumber roots, we initiated a study of the chemical components of Cucumber roots, base on the previous study. We study to determine the varieties of the experimental samples by conventional methods of Chinese identification; and isolated the chemical compositions of the butanol extracts of Cucumber roots by repeated silica gel column chromatography, gel column chromatography and thin layer preparative chromatography, then identified the structures of the chemical compositions.18 compositions were isolated from the butanol extracts of Cucumber roots, and 13 compounds were identified:stigmasta-8(14), 22-diene-7a-methoxy-3β-ol, stigmasta-4,6,8(14),22-tetraen-3-one, dehy-droeburicoic acid, a-spinasterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, ursolic acid, 3β-hydroxymultiflora-8-en-17-oic acid, Methyl 1H-indole-3-acetate, methyl 1H-indole-3-carboxylate,1H-indole-3-aldehyde,4-hydroxycin -namic acid,2-hydroxybenzyl alcohol, isovanillin,p-hydroxybenzalde-hyde. In these components, stigmasta-8(14),22-diene-7a-methoxy-3β-ol was a new chemical composition, the others were isolated from Cucumis sativus L. for the first time exceptα-spinasterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyrano-side.The studies of this subject lay a solid foundation for the comprehensive utilization of the resources of cucumber, and provide a scientific basis for the development of the quality standards of Cucumber roots.
