Procopius is a great historian of Byzantine Empire in the Justinian era. His works include:History of the Wars. Secret History and On the Buildings. They are very important source for the later study of History in Justinian era.Procopius’s thinking of historiography has features that are rich of connotation and have distinct characteristics. From the essence, his thoughts absorbs the traditional history of ancient Greek and Roman historians, which insist on seeking the truth of applying classical history and philosophy, and focus on critical and historical data that reveals the causal relationship between of the history. Since he was deeply influenced by traditional cultural, the classical political philosophy enables him has a profound acknowledgement and understanding. The political theory mainly embodies inherit of government and strong criticism of tyranny. He treats the political philosophy as a theoretical tool of analyzing social problems. Besides, his complex view of destiny also clearly shows the deep influence of the history from classical culture. Procopius is a linking point that plays a connecting role in the Byzantine history. His characteristics of historical idea not only reflect the good essence of historians, but also reflect the spirit of this period, having significant effect of the history research.This paper focus on exploring Procopius’s historical thinking in order to have a in-depth and comprehensive understanding of the early Byzantine social culture, especially the development status and characteristics of the historiography. Based on this, the paper uses historical materialism and dialectical materialist thoughts as the instruction, combines the macro and micro discusses and employs method of historical analysis and comparison of the history, so as to probe and discuss information about Procopius’s method in the ideas of history background, the characteristics and the practice.This thesis includes foreword, text and conclusion.In the foreword, the author firstly outlines the academic value and significance of this study, and then the literature review about scholars at home and abroad of this project will be briefly demonstrated.The text has mainly three chaptersThe first Chapter summarized Procopius’s ideas of historiography in the background how this idea forms. His historical thinking was born in the unique cultural context of Byzantine Empire, which is the product of Byzantine culture that has an inevitable and distinct era mark. There are two sections in Chapter two. The first section reviews and summarizes the macroscopic perspective of the origin of the Byzantine culture, religious environment, school education, the history development situation; the second section is the brief narrative about Justinian era, and his life and works are introduced.The second Chapter is divided into two sections and mainly discusses the characteristics of Procopius’s historical thinking. The first section illustrates how Procopius compares, inherits and applies the classical history ideas, and illustrates the characteristics of the performance of Procopius’s political concept, which reveals his political viewpoint of classical political philosophy. The second section explores and discusses Procopius’s complicated destiny view in two aspects. The first one is to demonstrate his religious argument about his cultural influence of Christian, which implies that why his destiny view is complicated and contradicted. The characteristics of the destiny view reveal that the concept of fate and god coexist.The third Chapter is divided into two sections and mainly discusses how Procopius put his historical thinking into practice. The first quarter from mainly Procopius historical thinking in the concrete practice of the classical colour reflect is expounded, separately from adhering to the principles of classical historiography and practicing the concepts classical political to analyze them. The second section discusses in historical ideology Procopius in the concrete practice of the mysterious reflect.In the conclusion is a brief summary and evaluation of Procopius’s characteristics of historical thinking.
