Chinese belongs to Sino-Tibetan family,and English belongs toIndo-European family. Because of the differences of cultural backgroundsand thinking methods,there are some differences in grammatical structureand pragmatic habit between the two languages,especially in themodifier.Meanwhile,according to the theses about modifier from CNKI,the writer finds the following problems.First, most theses are the studieson English as their second language and Chinese as their firstlanguage.Second,most theses are studies on Chinese-Tai,Chinese-Japanese, Chinese-French and Chinese-Indian.Last,most thesesare descriptive studies using contrast theory and fewer are explainablestudies using Error Analysis theory.This thesis is based on the study of English-Chinesecontrast,combining Inter-language and Error Analysis theories to studyChinese and English attribute and adverbial.Meanwhile in this thesis thewriter analyzes the Chinese attribute and adverbial errors of Americanstudents’.The language materials come from HSK corpus andnter-language corpus of Ji Nan University and grammatical texts as wellas theses and the errors from the writer’s teaching.In this thesis, the writerconcludes the4kinds of errors made by American students in theirChinese attribute and adverbial studying,which are omission,addition,overrepresentation and misordering,in which there are someerrors made frequently.What’s more, the writer analyzes the reasonresulting from these four kinds of errors.In the end,the writer gives somepractical suggestions for teaching and revising textbook and hopes toprovide some references and experience of Teaching Chinese as thesecond language for American students.
