Ethnic opera, Ballads of Canal has been regarded as precious heritage andsymbol of innovation of Chinese ethnic opera in the recent two years. The excerptrepresents typical arias of different characteristics of the heroine, Shui Honglian, forstudy of singing. The author introduces the arts features of Ballads of Canal andanalyzes the arias of the heroine, specially focusing on the singing of the heroine.The conclusions are as follow. Firstly, the performer should have solid basic skillsof breathing to ensure the singing and character building of the heroine. Secondly,the composer’s creations must be respected, which requires a flawless combinationof the lyrics, the tone, the clear correct pronunciation, the tune and the music.Thirdly, appropriate adjustments should be made according to differentcircumstances as well as diverse music contents in order to become the distinctcharacter which meanwhile needs to be highlighted. Fourthly, seize the musicalnomenclature on the music meticulously. Fifthly, based on a comprehensiveunderstanding of the background, the lyrics and the musical language, the stageperformance should illustrate the vivid figures in the play with gestures, eyes’expressions and body actions and so forth. I hope this study will provide someinstructions for the heroine’s performance in the Shui Honglian aria. And furthermore some contributions are willing to be made for the development of the NationalVocal music.
