5000-year-long Chinese civilization has contributed priceless treasures to the world history. Chinese, linguistically, has been the splendid one among them. In Chinese language, Idiom is known for its unique characteristics such as long and rich history, abundant cultural base, and popularity.Along with Chinese Reform and Opening-up, China has welcomed its new era of development and international recognition; and with the cultural globalization, growing foreign students are learning Chinese which makes idiom-teaching an important course content of Teaching Chinese as a foreign language. The historical origins of idiom, however, is often complicated for foreign students. It is, therefore, essential to explore a new teaching method that effectively motivates learning and interest.This paper summarizes the strengths and weaknesses of current idiom-teaching method based on the review of "Chinese Proficiency Vocabulary and Chinese Character Level Outline", the analysis of course materials, and the examination of students’ learning conditions. It also recommends best practices for teaching idiom regarding to its semantics, syntax, pragmatics. The paper is written is following4sections. First, an overview. This section includes the purpose and importance of teaching idiom, the scope of existing research, the current research method, the source of reference materials, and the epistemological framework.Second, the critical examination of current Chinese-teaching status. The examination concludes the weaknesses and strengths of current teaching methods through analyzing "Chinese Proficiency Vocabulary and Chinese Character Level Outline", course materials, investigation of students’ learning. The examination further leads to recommendations for improvement.Third, the key section, recommendations for teaching idiom regarding to its semantics, syntax, pragmatics respectively.Fourth, the conclusion, including a summary of key points, the research value and limitations..
