The object of the thesis is the adjective-object causitive structure in modernChinese. We collected all the adjectives that can form the adjective-object causitivestructure in the "Dictionary of Chinese adjective usage" in order to reflect the truesituation of this structure. In the first chapter, we analyzed the content and quality of adjective-objectcausitive structure. With the theory of caustive situation and driven schema, weexplained how adjective-object causitive structure shaped and worked. On this basis,we distincted pragmatic and syntactic causative structures, established syntacticcausative structure as the object of our research. In the second chapter, we researched the four basic elements in theadjective-object causitive structure and analysis them from syntactic and semanticfeatures. When showing the causative-result’s transformative character, we use thetheory of valence to explain the temporary valence-add phenomenon. In the third chapter, we described the different types of adjective-objectcausitive structure, taking the adjectives syllables into account. In addition, we foundadjective-object causitive structures tend to appear in headlines and slogans, so inthis chapter,we also described the structure in headlines and slogans. In the fourth chapter, we researched the motivation of the formation ofadjective-object causitive structure from both diachronic and synchronic view, usinghighlightness, subjectiveness, economy and other cognitive theories to explain. In the last chapter, we analysed the difference between adjective-objectcausitive structure and other structures, such as “shi”-causative sturcture, intransitive verb following with object structure, and the adjective-object causitivestructure in English from syntax, semantics, grammaticalization and so on to furtherexplore its features.
