Western utilitarianism,as one of the core of modern political ideology, hasmade great attributions to the process of Western modernization and also had aprofound impact on the development of China’s modernization. Western utilitarianismwas introduced to China accompanied by the invasion of China by Western powers.At that time,a group of advanced and enlightened people of insight realized thepositive respect of Western utilitarianism which could help modern China get rid offeudal backward state.And they highly valued and advocated utilitarianism. China’sReform and Opening up as well as the development of Socialist Market Economyoffered realistic foundation for the propagation and development of utilitarianism inChina.Western utilitarianism advocates reasonable egoism, pursuit of materialinterest,focus on achievement and effectiveness,courage of competing and positivelymakes progress,"Most people realize the greatest happiness"and so on.These thoughtshave great effect on the values of Chinese people.As bourgeois ideological point ofview, we should hold a dialectical view on western utilitarianism, we should absorbits rational values,and exclude its decadent and negative ideas.Thus, it can helppeople establish a correct outlook on life, values, worldview.This article is divided into three parts to introduce the effects that theutilitarian had on the values of Chinese.The first part introduces the reasons thatWestern utilitarianism has effect on the values of Chinese people,including theoreticalorigins of Western utilitarianism ideology, enlightenment of utilitarianism and thedevelopment of Socialist Market Economy offered realistic foundation for it. Thesecond part introduces Western utilitarianisms dual effect on the values ofChinese,including the positive and negative effect,and the Countermeasure ofeliminating the negative impact of Western utilitarian.The last part introduces theenlightenment that utilitarianism has brought on the values of Chinese people.Thesethree parts systematically introduce the effect that Western utilitarianism has on thevalues of Chinese people, so we can clearly realize that current Chinese people shouldestablish collective utilitarian values.
