| I have been studying calligraphy for more than ten years and I have been studying cursive calligraphy for morethan seven years now. At the very beginning of my educati on in cursive calligraphy, I just scribbled across practice papers and tried to interpret my own understanding of cursiv e calligraphy. Although time has past and my cursive calligr aphy skills have improved significantly, I have experienced along and complicated process in learning this particular ty pe of calligraphy. Cursive calligraphy, among all five major types of calligraphy, can most accurately express the writer ’s thoughts and feelings. However, in my opinion, it is al so the hardest type of calligraphy to be well written. Theprocess of learning this type of calligraphy includes plent y of dialectical relationships and calligraphic theory. In or der to have superior cursive calligraphy skills, ones must b e proficient both physically and psychologically. Furthermore, understanding of cursive calligraphy’s identification and ex planation according to ancient theorists and continuous practi ce are significant factors in creating excellent artworks. Wh en I first started to study Wang Duo’s cursive calligraphy during my second year bachelor degree, my ignorance made m e think that cursive calligraphy is just a faster version o f a running script. I only focused on the speed of writing and ignored the rhythm of writing and the occurrence of t he ink. Shortly after studying the double Wang’s work, I f elt the pureness and freshness from cursive calligraphy. Thus, I have started to focus on the delicacy and the rhythm o f my writing as well as the continuation of such class wor ks. My research and study of calligraphy from the Ming and Qing dynasties have significantly influenced the process of my learning experiences in calligraphy in general. This ess ay has used Wang Duo, Fu Shan, Xu Wei and many other call igraphers work as examples. Along with their theories, their works have strongly influenced my understanding and the stu dy of cursive calligraphy. |
