| Syntactic linearity is usually considered to be the primary principle inEnglish-Chinese simultaneous interpreting, because it can save time and relieveshort-term memory load of the interpreter. However, it needs some specific skills in SIpractice, among which the most important one is parsing skill. Guided by the principleof syntactic linearity and in accordance with a combination of “grammar-focusedtheory†and “meaning-focused theoryâ€, this thesis attempts to conclude three parsingskills (identity, fission and fusion) and four cohesive devices (omitting function words, using references, repeating antecedents, and adding logical connectives) in order to helpproduce coherent and complete rendition. What’s more, this thesis applies theabove-mentioned parsing skills and cohesive devices into the audio material “Remarksby President Obama in the68thUnited Nations General Assemblyâ€, aiming to testify thebenefits and feasibility of these skills. |
