A Report Of Interpreting Strategies Of Cohesive Devices In English-Chinese Simultaneous Interpreting Without Script

The cohesion and coherence of the text count to the basis of a passage.To ensure the cohesion and coherence,many cohesive devices would be used in the passage.Cohesive devices connect different elements or single sentences in order to form an entire article.As a hypotactic language,English requires such cohesive devices as reference,substitution and conjunction,so it is of great significance for interpreters to exactly seize cohesive devices in simultaneous interpreting,especially in English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting.Cohesive devices are able to help interpreters know the speech's structure so as to comprehensively and fluently express the speaker's thought and information.Meanwhile,audiences will understand the meaning of the speech and the connection of the context when they receive the target language.Therefore,it is necessary for interpreters to get cohesive devices exactly in English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting.With Cohesion Theory as theoretical framework and Gile's Effort Model as well as syntactic linearity principle as guidance,the thesis attempts to analyze and compare the interpreting outcomes of UN interpreter and the author without script on the basis of Theresa May's statement to the UN General Assembly.Through the analysis,the strategies taken by interpreters in dealing with cohesive devices in English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting without script are expected to be summarized in order to illuminate or help the author and student interpreters.Through the analysis of reference,substitution and conjunction,the thesis has found that the author and UN interpreter have chosen 4 strategies to deal with cohesive devices,which are reservation,addition,ellipsis and shift.They can help interpreter distribute effort to finish interpreting task fluently.The interpreter needs to analyze the type and the function of cohesive devices and use flexible strategies to handle it.making sure the cohesion and coherence of interpreting outcomes.
