A Study On The Relationship Among Emotional Intelligence, Social Support And Coping Style Of College Students

The aim of this study was to reveal the characteristics of emotional intelligence, social support and coping style of the contemporary college students and to research the relationships among them. This study investigated310college students from Anhui province and Zhejiang province, they were measured by EIS (Emotional Intelligence Scale), Social Support Rating Scale and Coping Style Questionnaires. The results showed as below:(1) The college students have a high level of emotional intelligence in general. In the emotional intelligence score, the female students were higher than the male students, the students from city were higher than those from village and town, and the arts students were higher than the science students and the only children were higher than the children having siblings.(2) The coping styles of college students used from more to less were:solving problem, help seeking, fantasy, rationalization, escaping, self-blaming. In the Mature coping style score, the male students were higher than the female students, the sciences students were higher than the arts students, the seniors were higher than juniors, and the students from village and town were higher than those from city, and the children having siblings were higher than the only children.(3) The college students have a high level of social support in general. In the social support score, the female students were higher than the male students, and the arts students were higher than the science students, and the juniors were higher than seniors.(4) Emotional intelligence of college students showed various degrees of positive correlations with coping styles. Social support was significant positively correlated with problem-solving and help seeking. Emotional intelligence was significant positively correlated with objective support, subjective support and utilization of support. Objective support, subjective support and utilization of support were significant positively correlated with self-emotion management and other emotion management.(5)Emotional intelligence, subjective support and utilization of support were main predicting factors to problem-solving. Emotional intelligence and utilization of support were main predicting factors to help seeking. Emotional intelligence and objective support were main predicting factors to escaping. Subjective support was main predicting factor to fantasy.Conclusion:Emotion intelligence, social support and coping style were influenced by many factors, and they were significant positively correlational in different dimensions. Emotional intelligence and different dimensions of social support were main predicting factors to coping style.
