Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809), one of the three famous intelligent composersof Viennese Classical School, has been acknowledged as “papa Haydn” and “father ofthe symphony. Though there is much more attention paid to symphony and stringquartet than piano sonatas among all his compositions, Haydn’s creation of keyboardmusic style peaked in the later period, influenced by the contemporaneous composersMozart and Beethoven.The article mainly study on tow aspects about Haydn’s later five piano sonatasand the creation characteristic of his piano sonatas. The article is divided into fourparts: the first part is the introduction of his life and his composing process.And italso contrast on the similarities and the differences of compositions’ style of Haydnwith his coeval composers Mozart and Beethoven. Secondly, it briefly presents thedifferent versions of Haydn; Thirdly, this thesis talks about the background ofHaydn’s later creation, and minutely the thesis gives an insight into the musical form、tonic and the evolution of his motive; finally, it understands the melody、rhythm、speed、characteristic of harmony and announcements through play. They are variousversions and opuses’ numbers of Haydn because the composer did not number hisopuses. These also happened to his different periods’ opuses. In this article, we adoptthe number from the version Langton (L) with Hob and the different periodmentioned of Haydn’s sonatas in Zhou Wei’s book named “Western Piano History ofArt”.Each of the Haydn’s later period five piano sonatas, express his vivid characterand unique imagination. These five sonatas manifest on the creative skills, musicalform, layout, thoughtful of the opus and the musical expression force is the mostmature and most outstanding opuses in his whole life’s composing. Such research andanalysis about this five later period piano sonatas of Haydn have significant and longterm implications for the development of piano music.
