This paper studies the geographical scope of the Shannan Dao in the Tang Dynasty, and mainly researches the variation of population, agriculture, and transportation. The paper is divided into four chapters. In the first chapter, the paper studies on the number of states in Shannan Dao. As a result, we can studies another problems. In the second chapter, the article studies the factors which affect Shannan Dao’s population by the statistic of documents. In the third chapter, the article studies the level of Shannan Dao’s agriculture and it’s farming methods. And in the last chapter, the article studies some important routes of Shannan Dao, to analyses the effect of traffic to economic development, and the characteristics of these routes.There were40states in Shannan Dao during the Tang Dynasty. And14of them belong to Shannan Dao from beginning to end. According to ancient documents, the regular of population in Shannan xi Dao was same to the Tang Dynasty. While, Shannan dong Dao’s population peak was in Yuan He period. There were five factors can explain the phenomenon. They are war, southwest minorities, natural disasters, and so on. The war was the most important factor in them. Many advanced technologies were used in agricultural of Shannan Dao. The agricultural’s level of Shannan Dao was unbalance.Due to the natural environment of Shannan Dao, the food production was not good. The paper is mainly studies three waterways and three lands. In general, the state that closes to traffic roads will economically active. Luo Gu road was most important in political in the Tang Dynasty later period.There must be many mistakes in the paper, I hope distinguished scholars can give me some suggestions to correct them.
