Chinese opera, the unique folk art of the Han people, was first appearedin the primitive society and thrived during the mid-twelfth century to thebeginning of thirteenth century, a period called by people as the YuanDynasty. Chinese opera in the Yuan Dynasty was fairly mature, as therewere a number of brilliant opera artists and works. Meanwhile, in theseworks many fresh and alive female characters were created, providingimportant study blueprint for this paper. This paper explores the females’ fates in the Yuan Dynasty throughstudying the female character in the Yuan opera in the perspective ofhistory, custom and marriage. According to the female positions in thesociety and families, I classified females at that time into three types:housewives of normal families, girls from rich families and prostitutes. These three types of women can general include all female identities atthat time and also have obvious difference among each other. From thesedifferent identities, we can find different females’fates, and moreover aftercomparing and generalizing these characters using the “character theory”of Feminist Thought, we can know their lives at that time.
