Guo Wen Yue Kan (Chinese Monthly) is “the most influential national-levelChinese language education journal with the longest frequency of publication, thegreatest writers, and the widest field of publication” in the1930s and1940s. Thejournal with abundant contents mainly publishes four types of articles includingargument on Chinese language teaching, Chinese monograph, anthology of ancientand modern poems, and demonstration of writing mistakes. Meanwhile many leadingeducation experts and celebrated scholars at the time wrote articles for the journal. Bythe journal some scholars have discussion and research on Chinese language teachingand relevant issues, and provide help for young students and teachers. This journalwell concludes the history of Chinese education in that period and keeps a great dealvaluable information about the Chinese language education in that era.This thesis, based on the82issues of the journal Guo Wen Yue Kan, byemploying such methods as document retrieval and research, content analysis,comprehensively studies the thoughts upon Chinese language education in Guo WenYue Kan. On one hand, this thesis studies the reform thought on Chinese curriculumin the journal, including the curriculum content system, compilation andreconstruction of textbooks, argument upon classical Chinese teaching and standardChinese teaching, and revolution arising from the reading book “Freshman Chinese”.On the other, this thesis by studying the strategies of handwriting, reading and writingin the Chinese language teaching practice, explores the practical significance of theChinese teaching thoughts in the journal upon the present basic education curriculumreform and the discipline construction in colleges and universities. It is hoped thatthis thesis would contribute to the further research on Chinese education thoughts inthe1930s and1940s.
