The modal adverb teaching has been a difficulty and focus in teaching ofChinese as a foreign language, so we made a thoroughly study on the acquisition ofChinese commonly used Modal Adverbs by Vietnamese students according to thetheory of second language acquisition, by adopting the method of combining naturallanguage and grammar test. In this study, we selected48Modal Adverbs based onthe Chinese proficiency vocabulary and grade outline of Chinese characters(revised edition), the grading standards of the level of Chinese and the grammarclass outline and the teaching outline for foreign students who are learningChinese in high schools (long-term studies) as the scope.First of all, we made a quantitative analysis on the usage of modal adverbs in allstages of early, middle and senior through the interlanguage corpus, then analyzedthe error types and the causes of errors of the48Modal Adverbs at various stageswhich made by Vietnamese students. Secondly, data processing combined withgrammar test results, we confirmed the acquisition sequence of the commonly usedModal Adverbs, then put forward some teaching suggestions at various stages basedon errors analysis and acquisition sequence. Thirdly, a contrast has been carried on tothe acquisition sequence of Modal Adverbs of Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesiastudents, and we found that in terms of the overall data the three counties’ students’acquisition sequence of Modal Adverbs has a higher consistency, they can learn fromeach other to some extent. Finally, in order to improve the teaching effect of modaladverbs, we also proposed some suggestions based on the investigation of thearrangement of modal adverbs in the Chinese proficiency vocabulary and gradeoutline of Chinese characters (revised edition), the grading standards of the levelof Chinese and the grammar class outline, the teaching outline for foreignstudents who are learning Chinese in high schools (long-term studies), the outlineof syllabus for New HSK Test and Boya Chinese Textbook.
