On The Relationship Between Shi Tao And "Painting And Calligraphy"

The combination of "poetry, calligraphy, painting and seal cutting" is the classic painting form for the ancient painters after their long exploration, playing a deep influence on the development of the painting of man-of-letters and their aesthetic sense. Shi Tao was a typical painter in this form. The thesis tries to explain the formation and development of the typical characteristics of painting of man-of-letters---the combination of "poetry, calligraphy, painting and seal cutting", in combination with the artistic works and thought of Shi Tao. For the long run, the educational circle has achieved rich results in the research on Shi Tao, but at the same time he is also a typical literary painter with complete accomplishments. There remains much research value on his artistic culture of poetry, calligraphy, painting and seal cutting.The thesis consists of five parts. The first part introduces the source, formation and historical evolvement of the combination of "poetry, calligraphy, painting and seal cutting", and thus gets such conclusion as about the linkage between calligraphy and painting, the same rule between painting and poem, and the brilliant reflection between painting and seal cutting. Part two mainly explores the relation between men of letters and the combination, and discusses the irreplaceable role of the men of letters in the formation of the combination; the art achievements of Shi Tao, specially his achievements in poem, calligraphy, painting and seal cutting have been researched in part three; and in part four, the relation between the formation of his artistic thought and the combination has been discussed, and such has been found that his profound artistic mind is attributable to his wide artistic culture; While part five is mainly about the influence of Shi Tao on future painters. Shi Tao, as a creative art master, has exerted a great influence upon future generations, and has naturally left to future painter his artistic concepts and knowledge in the combination of "poem, calligraphy, painting and seal cutting.Through the research on the evolvement process of the combination of "poem, calligraphy, painting and seal cutting", and the research on the case of Shi Tao, we are more aware of functions that the contents of the paintings of men-of-letters and a complete artistic culture hold to painting art achievements.
