On The Writing Of Monks In The Novels Of Tang Dynasty

The Buddhists referred to in Tang Novels are various. This article regarding the descriptions of the Buddhists in Tang Novels as the main research object, aims to revealing the existence styles of the Buddhists in the Tang Dynasty through the descriptions of the Buddhists in novels, analyzes its forming reasons and explains the value of the descriptions of the Buddhists in Tang Novels. The first part of the article discuss the Buddhism and the descriptions of the Buddhists in Tang Novels, mainly involving three aspects:the spread of the Buddhism in the Tang Dynasty and the improvement of the status of the novels; the development of the Tang Buddhism and the Buddhists’into the novels; the descriptions of the Buddhists in Previous Tang Novels. The second part of the paper describes the Buddhists’ activities written in Tang Novels, which are divided into seven categories. The third part, summarize the overall characteristics of the Buddhists in Tang Novels namely the Magical power, the features like the devil and the secular features of them. The secular is the most important and the most common characteristics of the Buddhists in Tang Novels, mainly includes four aspects:paying great importance to the relationship such as family love, friendship and so on; associating with the powerful man with fame and fortune acquired; failing to stop their inner desires; the uneven level in Moral and behavior. The fourth part mainly analyzes the causes of the Buddhist monks’ situation in Tang Novels from the political, social and religious three aspects.In addition to, it also explains the literary and historical value of the descriptions of the Buddhists in Tang Novels.
