Disyllablicing is one of the internal regularity of the development of the Chinese vocabulary. Xuanshizhi is a legendary collections about immortal demon magic stories writtened by Zhang Du who lived in the Tang dynasty. It is important material that we study of the modern Chinese. The book has numerous disyllabic and polysyllabic words, that is the book’s notable characteristic,it is also an obvious sign of colloquial language and popularization. This article intends to proceed to investigate to this type of words within the book.Takes on Xuanshizhi as the object of study, and attempts to present a essential states and some important features of the Chinese disyllabic and polysyllabic words at that time by describing and analyzing the disyllabic and polysyllabic words in the book.And then,we try to reveal the law of the Chinese vocabulary spreads by comparison with the representative literatures in Pre-Qin dynasty to the Northern and Southern dynasties.This paper analyses with morpheme and combining word’ theory,and classify and depict of the disyllabic and polysyllabic words with diachrony and common、typicality and synthesis. So we can understand these words systemically, roundly, deeply and plain. And the research makes a contribution to glossary’ research of the Xuanshizhi and we will peek glossary’ disyllabic and polysyllabic words circs at the Late Tang Dynasty.The paper includes seven parts:the first part is an introduction, which summarizes the presents status of the study on ancient disyllabic and polysyllabic words,as well as summarizes the relevant research on Xuanshizhi. Then,we illustrates the research significance of this topic and the research methods.The first chapter is the study of coordinative disyllabic and polysyllabic words in Xuanshizhi which made a detailed description semantic composition and word-formation.The second chapter is the study of subordinate disyllabic and polysyllabic words in Xuanshizhi which made a detailed description semantic composition and word-formation.The third chapter is the study of other disyllabic and polysyllabic compound words in Xuanshizhi which include dominant、statement、reduplication、and additive disyllabic and polysyllabic words.The fourth chapter is the study of single morpheme subordinate disyllabic and polysyllabic words in Xuanshizhi that includes binding words and transliterated words.The forth chapter is the diachronic comparison research.We get the state of development in the history of Chinese through the comparison the disyllabic and polysyllabic words in Xuanshizhi with the representative literatures in Pre-Qin dynasty Western Han and Eastern Han Dynasties and Northern and Southern dynasties.The last part is the conclusion,which draws the features of the disyllabic and polysyllabic words in Xuanshizhi on the basis of quantitative statistics and qualitative analysis.
