The study of vocabulary of ancient Chinese books is the basic work of Chinese history research.After a collection of vocabulary research results from a number of ancient Chinese books in the same time,We can sum up a dating lexical situation of the Eastern Han Dynasty as far as possible,and then grasp the law of development of vocabulary of the dynasty.BaiHuTong is a Book of generalargumentative discussion written by Ban Gu during the Eastern Han Dynasty,it is the product of the BaiHu abbey conference.The meeting was a discussion of the Confucian classics academic conference held in BaiHu abbey with Da Fu,Bo Shi,Yi Lang,Lang Guan and many students,it aims to discuss the similarities and differences of the Five Classics and consolidate the ruling position of the Confucian thoughts.The book has a wide range of contents and distinctive features of language,it includes a large number of new disyllabic words of the Eastern Han Dynasty.Through the synchronic or diachronic study of these words can help us to understand the process of the Eastern Han Dynasty polysyllabic words.At the same time,it can also help to improve some of the problems appear in the process of codification of the Chinese dictionary.According to the author's statistics and analysis,BaiHuTong consists of 817 polysyllabic words.This article investigates the semantics,part of speech and word order of 817 polysyllabic words from the synchronic angle and the diachronic angle.In the synchronic level,these polysyllabic words can be divided in pure polysyllabic words and compound polysyllabic words by different word formation among them,pure polysyllabic words can be divided into two kinds of binding words and reduplicated words,compound polysyllabic words can be divided into the Union,Modifying,Governable,Expressive,Additional and Eclipsed six types,a total of eight types.In the diachronic level,we compared the 817 books of polysyllabic words with ancient books of the pre Qin Period,find out its features of development.And then we explore downward,compare them with modern Chinese vocabulary,study the patterns of change of word meaning,and summarize the characteristics of polysyllabic words in the development and the change of the Eastern Han Dynasty.Thus the outline of the development of Chinese vocabulary can be clearly presented.We also compare the polysyllabic situation data in BaiHuTong with theChinese Dictionary and find that there are some problems in theChinese Dictionary,such as some entries or items are not included.According to the polysyllabic words situation BaiHuTong we can supplement and improve the deficiencies of the Chinese dictionary.
