A Textual Research On "Style" In Tang Dynasty 's Painting History

Teng Gu, one of the famous historian of China in 1920s-1930 s w ith extensive researc h field who twice studied abroad and introduced the exotic acad emic thoughts and method s to develop Chinese academic study.His works made an excellent contribution for Chine se archaeology, art history, archival scie nce and art education, especially in t he field of art history. His book s "A brief history of the China art" and "Tang and Song Dynasty pain ting history" promoted the transformation of Chinese art h istory from tradition to m odern, therefore, he was honored as the Founder of Chinese modern art hist ory.Teng Gu was covered under the dust of history for ha lf a century since 1941 when he passed away due to the chan ging of age. Until the t urn of the century he was review ed what caused surprise for academic circle.Especially in the recent decade, “Teng Gu” researches became famous subjects which mainly focuses on how western “ stylistics” influence Chinese art history research. The i nfluence particularly reflects on his w ork "Tang and Song D ynasty painting h istory" Publis hed in 1933. Scholars mostly keep positive view to this book, especially it written such e arly as 1920s-1930 s,that is outstanding. In add ition, "History of the Tang and Song paintin g" first edition w as published after T eng returned from the Germany, while stylistics gaine d it popularity in the German y therefore scholars generally accept the view that it written with strong stylistics atmosphere.However, I read this book a few times, found that the use of stylistics was over prai se to some extent. In fact, T eng Gu delivered the revised document of " Tang and Song Dynasty painting history " to press b efore he studied in Germany,meanwhile, he had com prehended the stylistics study before it.In a word, t he purpose of this p aper is to st udy the application of sty listics in the " Tang and Song Dynasty painting history " which focus on t he relation between this b ook and sty listics. Through investigating the c ontent carefully, summarizing the q uestion under the text and comparing with the article of Teng Gu after he returns China. As far as I a m concerned that the use of sty listics in t he " Tang and Song Dynasty painting history " is over praise in t he academic circles. T eng Gu was an in troducer who dabbles the sty listi cs study when he written this book.
