An Analysis Of The Usage Of "X" And "X" In Orientation Structure And A Contrastive Study Of Chinese And English

Because of the differences of spacial concepts between native Chinese speakers and native English speakers,when learning the direction compound "x里" and "x上", students who speak English as their monther tongue tend to make mistakes.this thesis is trying to make a new semantic classification of "x里" and "x上" based on spacial concepts in order to make it easier for the students to understand.Meanwhile,we compared "x里" and "x上" with their corresponding forms in English and then analyzed them,trying to find better way to teach this two direction compounds.First of all, this thesis made a semantic classification of "x里" and "x上".Differs from the existing papers,our classification is based on spacial concepts to make it easier to learn and remember.After that,based on searching corpus,we analyzed the corresponding forms of "x 里" and "x上"in English.At last,according to the results of the contrastive study,we offered some advices to the teaching of "x里" and "x上".According to this thesis,at first,the semantic classification based on spacial concepts is based on understanding which is a better way to remember;Secondly, the mistakes students make mostly due to the differences of spacial concepts between the two societies.Besides, some of the mistakes due to the abstract meanings which are extended from the original meanings.Thirdly,we cannot ignore the many other corresponding forms of "x里" and "x 上"except for "in X"and "on X".Fourthly, teaching prepositional frame is good for students to avoid making mistakes when using direction compounds.We need to pay more attention to the location words in Chinese.
