Khaled Hosseini is a shinning star in contemporary American literature. As an American Afghan, He was born in rich Islamic culture and grew up in western culture. Both influenced by eastern and western culture, Khaled Hosseini has an open third-party view by reason of the dual cultural background. Khaled Hosseini’s early immigrants experience forms his pluralistic cultural identity. as a consequence he can re-examine Afghanistan with dual Angle of view and consciously creating literature. In writing, he combines the creation method of western literary with storytelling style of Afghanistan to form his own unique writing features and wins recognition of readers grasp the mainstream American voice. He relates the vicissitudes of life and stirring story occurred in Afghanistan with exquisite and keen brushwork. He discusses the culture shock between east and west, cultural identity, the country’s religious culture and the system of race and class. this paper takes Khaled Hosseini’s three published novels as the research object, namely The kite runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns and And the mountains echoed. Mainly based on the related theory of cultural identity and connecting with the narrative related theory, Khaled Hosseini’s cultural identity is analyzed based on close reading of the text. The aim is to discuss the thinking and exploration of Khaled Hosseini when he re-positioned his cultural identity.This thesis is divided into the following five parts:The introduction mainly introduces Khaled Hosseini, his writings, domestic and overseas research status about Khaled Hosseini and research methods and the train of thought used in this paper.The first chapter mainly analyzes Khaled Hosseini’s efforts in striving for speaking right of Afghanistan. The influence of Afghan culture, ancient Greece and the Buddhism culture on Khaled Hossein is discussed and alienation of home culture when Khaled Hosseini was affected by western culture after he immigrated to the United States is analyzed.The second chapter analyzes the influence of cultural identity on family relations. The conflict and collision of the culture between Christianity and Islam are elucidated which is aimed to analyze the embarrassment when Khaled Hosseini try hard to strive for speaking right among the American mainstream.The third chapter analyzes the pilgrims and ambivalence when immigrants become pilgrims from defectors and the issue of cultural identity. The aim is to discuss the thinking and exploration of Khaled Hosseini when he re-positioned his cultural identity.The conclusion reiterates the thesis main ideas based on the analysis of cultural identity and explains the value of researching Khaled Hosseini combined with the post-colonial context. |
