Since the 1940s, Eileen Chang has been active in her writing career till her death in the 1990s.Throughout her 50 more years of writing, we can easily see there were lots of repetitions and adaptations in her fictions, which constituted her world of literature, and presented the change in her literary works. Repetitions and adaptations in Eileen Chang’s fictions should be an important research field for us to pay attention to.The thesis starts with organizing Eileen Chang’s fictions which involved with repetitions and adaptations. Through close reading, comparative analysis and historical data study, the thesis makes attempts to formulate the tracks of Eileen Chang’s changes in themes and writing skills, and reveals the reasons and values of her changes. Thus, the thesis tries to make up for the lacks in the research field.According to the fictions involved with repetitions, Chapter 1 analyzes what Eileen Chang repeated and why she repeated, and pointed out those repetitions presented the healing process of her emotional trauma.According to the fictions involved with adaptations, Chapter 2 analyzes what Eileen Chang rewrote and why she rewrote, and pointed out that adaptations presented the changes of her political orientation, aesthetic tropism and life views.Based on the first two chapters, Chapter 3 formulates the changes of Eileen Chang’s writing skills, which includes the limited use of Rhetoric and images, simple writing styles, and anti-tradition strategies.Chapter 4 mainly reflects the reasons and values of Eileen Chang’s changes in literary works, and formulates that those changes presented not only her transformations in both creation motive and creative mentality, but also her tireless pursuits of art, and rigorous attitudes towards writing.
