The VV-type verb reduplication is not only a common language phenomenon in Chinese, but also an important grammar point in teaching Chinese as a second language. Chinese Proficiency Test Syllabus lists it as a test center. When teaching Chinese in Thailand, the author found that the Thai students don’t use VV-type verb reduplication frequently in the speech production though there is reduplication in Thai language. The essay investigates this topic based on the syntactic priming from three parts. In the first part, the essay inspects the ontology research of VV-type verb reduplication, which relates to the experiments below. We choose the verbs whose reduplication type is W, like zou zou, yanjiu yanjiu, xi xi zao, etc. from Chinese Proficiency Test Syllabus (from Level 1 to Level 6). And then we research the examples of these words in CCL corpus (website). We describe and analyze the different conditions of the words of different syllables producing the VV-type verb reduplication. We thought that compared the double-syllable verbs, the single syllable verbs can produce the verb reduplication in VV form more frequently. What’s more, we investigate the syntactic function of VV-type verb reduplication. We found that Chinese native speakers have the orientation to the sentence structure when using VV-type verb reduplication. In the second part, we have two language experiments to investigate the syntactic priming in the production of VV-type verb reduplication. Through setting the different variables, the essay investigates whether single syllable verbs and syntactic function will influence the effects of syntactic priming respectively. We found that compared the syllabic verbs, the subjects cling to use the double-syllable verbs to produce VV-type verb reduplication in the same priming condition and the syntactic function has little effect on the syntactic priming. In the last part, the essay integrates the results of the ontology research and the syntactic experiments and put forwards some suggestions in teaching Chinese as a second language. In the teaching aspect, we think that raising the repetition rate and the input of VV-type verb reduplication is propitious to form the language sense. The language sense works in the production of VV-type verb reduplication. Thus, we raise some suggestion of teaching in different stages based on language sense. What’s more, the essay gives some advice for teaching W-type verb reduplication in teaching Chinese as a second language. They are from the views of the relating knowledge framework, semantic sense training, grammar sense training and pragmatic sense training.
