As a kind of advanced and main competent activity which differs from animals, rationalthought is the main form of thinking for the human to grasp the nature, the content and theregularity of the objective things in the world. Art activities as the vehicle and platform toexpress the spiritual world of human, are influenced by various factors such as historicalbackground, social development and cultural thought, and so on. The rational spirit of traditionalwestern is mainly in theoretical aspects such as philosophy and aesthetics, in addition, graduallypenetrates into the art performance. With the deepening and development of human civilizationhistory, people have formed the rationality of all-round, multi-angle observation of life habits.Under the subtle influence, the artist’s art creation form and subject matter content started toinnovate, gradually, formed diversified artistic creation styles such as freelance writing,rule-based, and rich varieties of creation forms and themes such as landscape painting, figurepainting and portrait.Art creation is one of the important ways of expressing the inner world of the human spiritof independence, in addition, is the outcome of coordination and collaboration with the brain, thehand and the heart. The hand is the forms and techniques to convey the artistic conceptionand creative theme of the brain and the heart. Along with the production, deepening anddevelopment of the process of artistic creation, rational thought plays an important role as theessential factor. In addition, the analysis is based on the point of biological and scientific, thatsensibility is spontaneous and intuitive; however, rational thought is unique to humanbeings, which is the difference from biological thinking form, through the analysis and thinkingprocess. Therefore, in the process of studying the arts, I choose he rational thought as theresearch object which is peculiar to mankind and possesses subjective ideology to explore therational spirit, the characteristics and the influence in western art history. In order to analyze theperformance, spread and influence of the rational spirit in this period, I choose the newimpressionist as the representation.In this paper, the text is divided into three chapters. The firstchapter, longitudinally analyze the development and the influence of rational thought in traditional western art by tracing the development history of art as the main line and startingfrom the time angle. Explore the rational spirit influence for the artistic trend and development inthe period of ancient Greece, ancient Rome, medieval Europe, Renaissance and New Classicismrespectively. The second chapter, the focus of this chapter, I focus on analyzing the rationalregression of New Impressionism and its development with rational thought. From the causesof the subjective and objective reasons and art history background, social science and technologydevelopment to promote perspective, explore deeply the rational understanding and rationalregress under the influence of the rational division of artistic achievement, the theorydevelopment of optical and color science, in addition, expound systematically the achievementsand breakthrough of New Impressionism painters under the influence of the rational spirit onbehalf of their painters and their representative works. The third chapter, study the influence ofthe New Impressionist promoting rational spirit return on the development of the art.Respectively from the points of the Post Impressionism, Futurism and surrealism, excavate theinfluence of the rational spirit on the modern art in the form of case.
