The phrase,“English folk songs”, in this research mainly refers to the folksongs of the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland), which is asignificant heritage of British traditional musical culture. As an interdisciplinarymusical literature translation, the English folk songs’ translation and dubbingcorresponds to general rules of normal literary works as well as musicologicalprinciples. The essence of the English folk songs’ translation and dubbing is toswitch the languages without changing the music. A variety of transformations ofsongs and their translations and dubbings, and blends of music and culture clearlyindicate the distinctiveness and necessity of the research on Chinese translation ofthe folk songs. Based on the translation and dubbing work of Folk songs of England,Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, and applying Eugene Nida’s functional equivalencetheory of translation as theoretical basis, this research discusses problems related tothe linguistic differences and cultural barriers in English folk songs’ translation anddubbing works, further analyzes methods of writing Chinese lyrics from three musicangles: rhythm, rhyme and melody, and state basic translation and dubbing rules andstrategies for understanding and paraphrasing the original songs.
